It can be used both offensively and defensively (though a defensive Rift with no follow-up remains a bugbear for players everywhere)

That means you need to be racing and using your removal to win the race, where it will function as a big tempo swing in addition to source of card advantage, or you need a lot of removal to stop each of their attempts to generate a bit hit
